The Zammit Tabona family had a love for Mdina and especially The Xara Palace; so much so that on 6th April 1996 they acquired the stunning 17th century palace. It took them 3 years to restore the premises to its former glory and opened its doors in June 1999.

The Xara Collection is now in its second generation run by, Nicola and Justin. The values of ‘tender loving care’ and ‘family spirit’, are essential in the way things are done within the company.

Our story

Our History

The Zammit Tabona family pride themselves in being curators of the Maltese heritage especially that of Mdina. On the 6th April 1996 they acquired the stunning 17th century The Xara Palace. After 3 years of restoration, The Xara Palace opened its doors in June 1999 and this was the start of The XARA Collection. The same property became a proud member of the Relais & Chateâux family in 2001.

The de Mondion, the flagship restaurant with The Xara Palace went on to become one of the first Michelin star restaurants on the island in 2019. In 2012 the group ventured into catering and opened The Xara Lodge, a multi-purpose hall in very high demand for weddings, local and international corporate events alike. This paved way for other outside catering events in various venues around the island through The Xara Catering. The last addition to the outside catering portfolio was the prestigious Mediterranean Conference Centre where The Xara Caterers are one for the three exclusive caterers for the venue.

The Medina Restaurant has been part of The Xara collection portfolio since 2016. It now has been fully refurbished and re-opened with a completely different look and feel and also a unique dining experience as of March 2023. It is also Michelin Recommended.

The ever-growing collection has now ventured to St. Julians with two new restaurants namely OKA’s and Rosami at The Villa. OKA’s offers a fun and relaxed dining experience and Rosami offers experiental dinging experiences, opened its doors in September 2022 and recently gained a One Michelin Star.
