One team, working 52 weeks a year behind the scenes to look after strangers they may never see. Individuals rooted in precision and discipline, working endlessly to meet the deadlines of check-outs and check-ins. Tucking, folding, scrubbing, all to ensure the next person walking through those doors feels cared for instantly, with no doubt in their mind that the room they stand in is a comfortable, healthy space to wind down in.
This invisible hero shaping the guest experience is the housekeeping department, an often underappreciated and undervalued part of the industry, yet one of the crucial pillars of hospitality. Now, in an annual occurrence during the second full week of September, we mark Housekeeping Week, a moment for us all to give this department the appreciation and recognition it deserves.
Many do not realise the physical toll this role takes: constantly being on your feet and caring for everyone else, often while forgetting to care for yourself and your own physical wellbeing. There is more here than we allow ourselves to see. Yes, the decorative towels on a bed are a nice touch, but we can’t forget the technique and precision behind how the linen is folded when making the bed, the scent chosen for the room, or the placement of a welcome card. It is not purely about a clean floor or a decorative towel; it is about how this group of individuals spends their days preparing environments so that guests feel at ease, feel relaxed, feel at home.
Housekeeping is highly involved within hotels, but it also extends to any open public space, including restaurants.
So this Housekeeping Week, we take a moment to notice the details that didn’t happen by accident: the fresh linen, the neatly placed towels, the quiet order of a room you didn’t have to think twice about. If you see a member of housekeeping during your stay, a simple thank you goes a long way. It is a small gesture, but one that acknowledges the work so many guests never see.
The Xara Collection would like to extend a thank you to all the members of our housekeeping team who take care of all our properties. Your work rarely gets the spotlight it deserves, but it shapes every guest’s experience, and for that we thank you.
